'Armistice celebrations, Martin Place', Sydney, 1918

Description

This is a black-and-white photograph, 8.7 cm x 14.2 cm, of the celebrations in Martin Place, Sydney, following the Armistice, which was signed on 11 November 1918 in France to end hostilities in the First World War. Looking east up from the junction with Pitt Street, the Place is packed with men, women and schoolchildren milling about, wearing hats. A ship crowded with people, probably a minesweeper, stands in the Place, and flags of Allied nations, such as the USA and France, are flying on poles.
