Character Sketches
What techniques do storytellers use to create characters?

In this 3-5 lesson, students will analyze how a character's personality traits, actions and motives influence the plot of a story. Students will use their senses to create character sketches, then dramatize the character for an audience.

Learning Objectives 

Students will: 

  • Analyze how personality traits, actions, and motives influence the plot of a story.
  • Describe emotions portrayed by characters.
  • Use senses to add depth to a character.
  • Make text-to-self connections. 
  • Apply facial expressions, voice, and gestures to act out an event from a story.
  • Perform a short character sketch for an audience.

Lesson Visual Storytelling

In this K-2 lesson, students will examine how illustrations contribute to the telling of a story. Through picture books (without words), students will discuss and interpret details about the characters, setting, and plot. Students will create illustrations to accompany a text and then write text to accompany illustrations.
