Developed in partnership between AERO and Ochre Education, these lesson resources support the use of effective, evidence-based practices and address the learning expected in the Australian Curriculum. An exemplar unit plan provides guidance on the structure, sequence and decision-making made during the planning process.

This sequence of 11 lessons explores the structure, grammar and vocabulary used in biographical texts. They compose a biography of Faith Bandler and build their word knowledge.

Students will research and gather information on Faith Bandler, who worked tirelessly to support the rights of Aboriginal women.

Students will apply their knowledge of unstressed vowels in polysyllabic words to further practise spelling, use a spelling strategy for the words in the spelling list from Lesson 3 and take a test at the end of the lesson.

Lesson 5 Inspirational figures: Planning a biography

Students will plan a biography on Faith Bandler. They will use previous notes from Lessons 3 and 4 of this unit and collate them into a plan ready to write.

Students will write the first three paragraphs of the biography of Faith Bandler.

Lesson 7 Inspirational figures: Writing a biography (Part 2)

Students will use their plans to write the opening of the story in short parts. They will finish the lesson by reading the paragraph aloud.

Students will discuss what editing is and what an editor does. Then they will practise editing together.
