Developed in partnership between AERO and Ochre Education, these lesson resources support the use of effective, evidence-based practices and address the learning expected in the Australian Curriculum. An exemplar unit plan provides guidance on the structure, sequence and decision-making made during the planning process.

This sequence of 10 lessons will teach students about five-digit numbers and their properties.

Lesson 1 Recognising the place value of each digit in a five-digit number

Students will learn about five-digit numbers, how to represent them in different ways and how to consider how many 10,000s, 1000s, 100s, 10s and ones are in different numbers.

Lesson 2 Ordering and comparing numbers beyond 10,000

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-2

Students will learn how to work out whether a number is greater than or less than another number. They will also order and compare numbers.

Lesson 3 Ordering and comparing a set of numbers beyond 10,000

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-3

Students will look at how they can use place value to create the largest or smallest number. They will also compare and order two or more numbers.

Lesson 4 Finding 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000 more than a given number

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-4

Students will use their place value knowledge to find 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 more than a given number and consider how the digits change when they are required to regroup.

Lesson 5 Finding 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 less than a given number

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-5

Students will use their place value knowledge to find 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 less than a given number and consider how the digits change when they are required to regroup.

Lesson 6 Rounding numbers to the nearest 10

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-6

Students will learn to use counting sticks and number lines to record the two nearest multiples of 10, position a number on a number line and decide which is the closer multiple of 10 to the number.

Lesson 7 Rounding numbers to the nearest 100

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-7

Students will learn to use counting sticks and number lines to record the two nearest multiples of 100, position a number on a number line and decide which is the closer multiple of 100 to the number.

Lesson 8 Rounding numbers to the nearest 1,000

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-8

Students will learn to use counting sticks and number lines to record the two nearest multiples of 1000, position a number on a number line and decide which is the closer multiple of 1000 to the number.

Lesson 9 Finding the odd one out

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-9

Students will find the odd one out by using their knowledge of place value and rounding.

Lesson 10 Applying and consolidating: Reasoning with five-digit numbers

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-1-lesson-10

Students will apply and consolidate their knowledge of place value and rounding by recapping the key learning from previous lessons in the unit. They will then apply their learning to answer questions.
