Developed in partnership between AERO and Ochre Education, these lesson resources support the use of effective, evidence-based practices and address the learning expected in the Australian Curriculum. An exemplar unit plan provides guidance on the structure, sequence and decision-making made during the planning process.

This sequence of 15 lessons teaches students about various addition and subtractions methods and where to appropriately apply them.

Lesson 1 Deriving addition and subtraction facts

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-1

Students will learn to derive addition and subtraction facts by using part whole models to show how related facts can be derived from scaling up by 10, 100 or 1000.

Lesson 2 Deriving addition and subtraction facts using given calculations

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-2

Students will learn to derive addition and subtraction facts by using given calculations, consider how the whole or parts have changed and the impact this has on the new calculation.

Lesson 3 Choosing appropriate addition strategies

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-3

Students will look at addition equations and decide the best and most efficient strategy we could use to solve them.

Lesson 4 Choosing appropriate subtraction strategies

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-4

Students will look at subtraction equations and decide the best and most efficient strategy they could use to solve them.

Lesson 5 Applying and consolidating: Related number facts and appropriate strategies

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-5

Students will apply and consolidate their knowledge of deriving related number facts and most efficient strategies for calculating addition and subtraction equations. They will recap their key learning and apply that learning to answer questions.

Lesson 6 Adding using the column method with regrouping

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-6

Students will use the column method to add two four-digit numbers where regrouping is required in one column.

Lesson 7 Adding using the column method with regrouping multiple times

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-7

Students will use the column method to add two four-digit numbers where regrouping is required in multiple columns.

Lesson 8 Subtracting using the column method with regrouping

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-8

Students will use the column method to subtract two four-digit numbers where regrouping is required in one column.

Lesson 9 Subtracting using the column method with regrouping multiple times

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-9

Students will use the column method to subtract two four-digit numbers where regrouping is required in multiple columns.

Lesson 10 Subtracting from multiples of 1000

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-10

Students will explore how to calculate subtraction from a multiple of 1000.

Lesson 11 Applying and consolidating: Column

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-11

Students will consolidate their knowledge of the column method for both addition and subtraction by recapping the method, completing examples and applying their learning.

Lesson 12 Representing one-step word problems

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-12

Students will use bar models to represent addition and subtraction in one-step word problems.

Lesson 13 Comparison word problems

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-13

Students will use comparison bar models to represent addition and subtraction in one-step word problems.

Lesson 14 Two–step word problems

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-14

Students will use bar models to represent two-step addition and subtraction word problems.

Lesson 15 Consolidating: Addition and subtraction word problems

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-4-maths-unit-2-lesson-15

Students will recap their knowledge of how to use bar models to represent word problems that require addition or subtraction.
