Developed in partnership between AERO and Ochre Education, these lesson resources support the use of effective, evidence-based practices and address the learning expected in the Australian Curriculum. An exemplar unit plan provides guidance on the structure, sequence and decision-making made during the planning process.

This sequence of 10 lessons will enable students to understand seven-digit numbers as well as integers and decimals.

Lesson 1 Understanding other powers of 10 within one million

Students will begin to understand the magnitude of one million.

Lesson 2 Reading and writing seven-digit numbers

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-2

Students will establish a relational understanding of the relative magnitude of one million. They will learn to read seven-digit numbers and practise writing them in words and numerals before applying their learning in a matching task.

Lesson 3 Understanding how the digits in a number indicate its structure

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-3

Students will look closely at the digits in seven-digit numbers. They will gain an understanding of how they are composed and how they can be decomposed.

Lesson 4 Compare and order numbers to 10 million

Students will build on their understanding of numbers to 10 million through comparing and ordering lists of numbers. Depth of understanding is demonstrated by moving fluently between different representations and by using them to justify comparison statements.

Lesson 5 Rounding to a required degree of accuracy

Students will consider why estimates and rounding might be useful. They will explore rounding seven-digit numbers to the nearest multiple of 100,000 with varying degrees of accuracy.

Lesson 6 Estimating and rounding contexts

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-6

Students will develop number sense as well as applying the skills of rounding and estimating in everyday situations.

Lesson 7 Strategies for addition

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-7

Students will review a range of strategies to solve addition problems.

Lesson 8 Strategies for subtraction

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-8

Students will review a range of strategies to solve subtraction problems.

Lesson 9 Applying addition and subtraction

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-9

Students will learn to determine the effects of increasing or decreasing numbers of organisms in a food web.

Lesson 10 Addition and subtraction problems

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-6-maths-unit-1-lesson-10

Students will build on prior learning to develop a range of strategies to efficiently add and subtract within one problem.
