Developed in partnership between AERO and Ochre Education, these lesson resources support the use of effective, evidence-based practices and address the learning expected in the Australian Curriculum. An exemplar unit plan provides guidance on the structure, sequence and decision-making made during the planning process.

This sequence of 10 lessons focuses on building students' knowledge of particles and states of matter. They will learn about the differences in states of matter and the transition between them.

Lesson 1 Describe the states of matter

Students will learn how the movement and spacing of the particles is different in solids, liquids and gases; draw accurate diagrams to represent the particle arrangement in solids, liquids and gases; and use the particle model to explain properties of solids, liquids and gases.

Lesson 2 Describe how particles diffuse

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-2

Students will learn diffusion in terms of particles and high or low concentration, and use the particle model to explain why diffusion is different in solids, liquids and gases.

Lesson 3 Describe changes in state

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-3

Students will learn about changes of state that occur from solid to liquid and liquid to gas, in terms of particles.

Lesson 4 Investigate changes in state

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-4

Students will learn to interpret melting point and boiling point data and plot secondary data showing changes of state.

Lesson 5 Describe gas pressure

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-5

Students will learn to describe gas pressure, explain the effect of gas pressure on containers, and describe and explain the effect of temperature on gas pressure in terms of particles.

Lesson 6 Develop a model describing solutions

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-6

Students will learn to draw a particle model for a solution, make accurate measurements to test the conservation of mass theory, and explain the meaning of conservation of mass in terms of particles.

Lesson 7 Differentiate between pure and impure substances

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-7

Students will define a pure substance and link this to melting and boiling points, define a mixture and then describe simple separation techniques.

Lesson 8 Investigate separating mixtures

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-8

Students will identify parts of a mixture to be separated, write a method for separating a mixture and name key pieces of equipment and processes for separation to be successful.

Lesson 9 Describe distillation

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-9

Students will learn how simple distillation works, identify hazards and risks and suggest how to reduce them. They will also identify the components of a Liebig condenser and give reasons for this being more suitable than simple distillation equipment.

Lesson 10 Identify mixtures using chromatography

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-7-science-unit-1-lesson-10

Students will learn to identify mixtures using chromatography and describe how to separate a mixture using chromatography.
