Developed in partnership between AERO and Ochre Education, these lesson resources support the use of effective, evidence-based practices and address the learning expected in the Australian Curriculum. An exemplar unit plan provides guidance on the structure, sequence and decision-making made during the planning process.

This sequence of 15 lessons will teach students about cells, tissues and organs, and how they function in plants and animals.

Lesson 1 How to use a microscope

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-1

Students will learn to label the parts of a microscope, describe how to use a microscope using the correct terms, and calculate magnification.

Lesson 2 Prepare mounts for a microscope

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-2

Students will learn how to prepare wet mounts and stained mounts, and the advantages and disadvantages of each technique.

Lesson 3 Introduction to cell theory

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-3

Students will learn to define cell theory and eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

Lesson 4 Describe animal cells

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-4

Students will lean to label an animal cell and describe what each organelle does and how its role relates to its structure.

Lesson 5 Describe plant cells

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-5

Students will learn to label a plant cell and describe what each organelle does and how its role relates to its structure.

Lesson 6 Compare animal and plant cells

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-6

Students will learn to compare plant and animal cells, explaining those differences in terms of functions of the parts. They will be introduced to the process of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

Lesson 7 Describe specialised plant cells

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-7

Students will learn to investigate a range of specialised plant cells and relate the function of the cells back to their structure.

Lesson 8 Describe specialised animal cells

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-8

Students will learn to investigate a range of specialised animal cells and relate the function of the cells back to their structure.

Lesson 9 Diffusion of particles

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-9

Students will learn to define diffusion, explain factors that affect diffusion and discuss examples of diffusion in the body.

Lesson 10 Conducting a diffusion experiment

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-10

Students will learn to identify variables to change, measure and control to investigate diffusion work safely in order to collect and record data to test a hypothesis. Students will process the data to calculate a mean, accounting for anomalies, displaying data appropriately, including a table for results with units.

Lesson 11 Describe the digestive system

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-11

Students will label a diagram of the organs in the digestive system, and describe the function of the digestive system. They will also describe and explain some of the adaptations of the digestive system and link these to diffusion.

Lesson 12 Describe the respiratory system

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-12

Students will learn to label the parts of the respiratory system, and describe the path oxygen takes into the blood. They will describe the adaptations of the breathing system to allow for efficient diffusion.

Lesson 13 Composition of inhaled and exhaled air

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-13

Students will learn to describe the composition of the air we breathe in and out, explain the results of an experiment to prove the differences and then collect, display and process data appropriately.

Lesson 14 Work of Dr Fiona Wood

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-14

This lesson explores key ideas from the work of Dr Fiona Wood.

Lesson 15 Revision of cells

www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/ochre-resources/year-8-science-unit-1-lesson-15

Students will learn to recall key terms, definitions and structures related to cells, tissues, organs and systems. They will describe ways in which cells, tissues and organs are specialised for function. Finally, they will explain adaptations in terms of diffusion.
