Leisure survey
Your local newspaper has asked
you to write an article about how
kids use their leisure time.
You will need to conduct a survey
to find out information for your
article.
You can predict how a
whole group of people
(the population) will
answer by surveying a
smaller group (a sample)
of people.
To carry out the survey, you will:
  • Select Your topic.
  • Choose the questions you want to ask.
  • Conduct the interviews.
  • Sort the data.
  • Analyse the data to find the answers you're looking for.
  • Then you'll be ready to write your article.
In this activity you'll go through all these steps, but you'll concentrate
on choosing the right questions and finding answers in the data.
Select the topic you want to investigate for your article.
Who plays team sports? Do older kids play
more team sports than younger kids?
Which sports do kids play most?
Which artistic activities do kids like best?

    people have been surveyed.
This survey is about kids, so only people between the ages of
5 and 14 will be interviewed.
We will question 500 people. The sample will give us a good
idea about how most kids in the wider group would answer.
    Done!
    The 500 interviews are complete.
Let's sort the data that has been collected.
The results of your interviews have been organised in a table.
Use the table to explore the information that has been collected.
To show you understand the results table, answer these questions.
    Q1
Is the 57th person interviewed 14 years old?
    Yes
    No
    Q2
Does the first 5 year old interviewed play
    sport in a team?
    Yes
    No
    Q3
Do all the 14 year olds interviewed play
    sport in a team?
    Yes
    No
    Q1
Does the 43rd person interviewed play
    basketball?
    Yes
    No
    Q2
Does the first person interviewed who plays
football other than soccer also play tennis?
    Yes
    No
    Q3
Do all kids swim? (Hint: sort by swim.)
    Yes
    No
    Q1
Does the 39th person interviewed prefer
    singing?
    Yes
    No
    Q2
Does the last person interviewed prefer
    singing?
    Yes
    No
    Q3
Do more than 20 kids prefer dancing? (Hint:
    Sort by artistic activity.)
    Yes
    No
Roll over each graph type to read the information
    about it.
Select the graph type you think would be best to
    display your data.

This type of graph shows continuous data
(such as age). A histogram breaks the range of
the continuous variable into equal intervals, for
example 5-6 years. The graph also displays a
count (or a percentage) of observations that fall
into each interval; for example, the percentage
of students who own a dog.

Histograms can help answer questions such as
'Are 12 year olds more likely to own a dog than
    10 year olds?'

Now let's analyse the graph to find the answers to
    your survey questions.
The graph of the results gives you evidence that
    allows you to make conclusions.
Now it's time to write up the results.
First, choose the headline that best describes what
    you have found out.
Here is a histogram of your results.
The horizontal axis shows each age surveyed.

The vertical axis shows the percentage of kids
in that age group who answered 'Yes' to each
    question.
