SUBJECTS:  History

Imagine that, while working for a company responsible for pollution, you were a member of a commission to control pollution.

This clip looks at such conflicts of interest between big business and conservation.

The reporter explores the issue of whether an anti-pollution commission can be truly independent if people holding executive positions on it are employed by environmentally negligent companies.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What does the term 'conflict of interest' mean? Outline a scenario that illustrates this concept. Is it right that a major polluting company can belong to a conservation organisation? If a company contributes to a conservation organisation, does it give that company the right to continue polluting?
  2. 2.What is the main role of the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation? How does Mr Buckley attempt to solve his apparent conflict of interest between being head of one of the largest polluting companies and being on the Pollution Control Commission? What point is the film-maker trying to make with his comments on ammunition used in duck-shooting?
  3. 3.What appears to be the film-maker's attitude towards Mr Buckley and how does he make this clear to viewers? How might the conflict of interest exposed by this film clip be resolved, and what would be the likely results of this resolution?
  4. 4.Research on the Internet to find out what has happened to ICI Australia since this film was made. Has there been any evidence of other conflicts of interest like the one detailed in the film clip?
