Heywire: Inspirational Teens

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  7–8

Have you ever made a big contribution to your local community?

Heywire is a national competition that assists young people to make a difference in rural communities.

Bridie Johnstone from Woodend, Victoria, was a finalist of the 2012 Heywire storytelling competition for young people.

Listen to how she is using music to bring together the youth of Woodend.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What makes someone an inspiring leader? Create a mind-map of the qualities of someone you find inspirational.
  2. 2.Bridie is in a group called MITS. What does MITS stand for? What does this organisation do for teenagers? List the benefits for teenagers from being involved in MITS concerts. Identify words and phrases that Bridie uses to show that MITS is inspiring.
  3. 3.Do you think Bridie is inspiring? Imagine you are the Heywire judge and explain whether or not you think she should receive the prize. Create a 'Vote for Bridie' poster. Include what it is she does for the youth of Woodend and why she is an inspiring leader. Make your poster colourful and attractive.
  4. 4.Write a letter to the organisers of Heywire to nominate someone that you know (or even yourself!) to be part of the Heywire competition. In your letter, carefully explain why this person's story is inspiring. Make sure you set out your letter correctly.
