ABC Rosh Hashanah: The feast

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  3–4

Is there any day of the year when you and those in your community have a special meal, or feast?

Australia has people from many countries, cultures and religions. That is why not all Australians have feast days on the same days.

This clip explores the feast of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Things to think about

  1. 1.A feast is a special meal that we eat to celebrate something. Make a list of any days of the year when you and those close to you usually come together to have a feast. Then make a list of things you usually eat on such a day. Also list the things that happen on that day.
  2. 2.What does the speaker say about what the table represents during the feast for Rosh Hashanah? A synagogue is a Jewish temple. What does the family do at the synagogue on the eve of Rosh Hashanah? How do they feel as they walk home from the synagogue?
  3. 3.How were the women and men, boys and girls dressed? Why might this tell us that about the meal? How could you tell that the man at the head of the table was chanting prayers? What did the children tell us about eating for a sweet new year?
  4. 4.Make a list of foods that you saw in the video that were part of the meal for Rosh Hashanah. Then design a menu for this feast and illustrate it with pictures of the various dishes.
