Dairy cows eat green grass in paddock
For the Juniors: Why do cows make milk?

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2, 3–4

Have you ever wondered why cows make milk?

In this clip you will learn the answer to this question.

You will also see how cows are milked in a large dairy.

Join Bill, a dairy farmer, as he tends to his herd of dairy cows.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Do you know why cows make milk? Do you know how farmers milk their cows? In this clip you will find out how how one kind of dairy farm works to provide milk for us to drink.
  2. 2.Why do cows make milk? What is the special name for animals that make milk to feed their babies? Where do cows store milk so it can be fed to their calves? Bill and his father Tom put the calves in their own paddock, away from their mothers. Why do they do this?
  3. 3.Do you think the cows look forward to visiting the milking shed? What tells you the answer? How do Bill and Cody look after the cows when they are in the milking shed? When the milking machine is connected to the cow, the narrator says, 'To the cow, it feels like her calf is sucking the milk.' Do you think it would feel the same?
  4. 4.Not all dairy farmers care for their cows in the same way that Bill cares for them. Some farmers keep the cows and their calves in the same paddock for weeks or months. Some use their hands to milk their cows instead of a machine. Use your computer or visit the library to see if you can find pictures of people caring for and milking cows. You might even want to visit a farm to find out more.
