The Sustainable Gardens
ROCKY BLUE
Hi, I'm Rocky Blue reporting here at the Edinburgh Gardens. Here's Georgia Williams with more news.
GEORGIA WILLIAMS
Thank you, Rocky. Edinburgh Gardens is a large park located in North Fitzroy, Melbourne. Edinburgh Gardens has been around for 151 years and were discovered in 1862 by Queen Victoria. The gardens are significant because of the large number of established trees, garden beds and their bandstand. Back to you, Rocky, with your interview with Chris.

ROCKY BLUE
Chris, what was the Edinburgh Gardens like back in the day?
CHRIS
There used to be train tracks that used to go through it, through the park into the city. It used to be the home of the Fitzroy Alliance Football Club. There were factories around the edges that are no longer there, and the basketball courts were pretty full with kids playing.
ROCKY BLUE
How sustainable was the Edinburgh Gardens?
CHRIS
Oh, it wasn't as sustainable as it is now, especially because of the factories and the train tracks that used to go through it. So yeah, it wasn't as sustainable and as environmentally-friendly as it is now.
ROCKY BLUE
What are some of the sustainable improvements do you think the Edinburgh Gardens have made?
CHRIS
They've put in a 200,000-litre tank to help with the irrigation and save water in the park. There's a computerised irrigation system in place for all the parks. And they use a lot of mulch in the garden beds to keep the moisture in the park for the trees and plants.
ROCKY BLUE
What do you think about the Edinburgh Gardens now?
CHRIS
Oh, it's a lot more environmentally-friendly and a lot more sustainable because of the council's actions and the people living in the area take care of the park.
ROCKY BLUE
Do you think Edinburgh Gardens was more sustainable in your day?
CHRIS
No, I don't think so. There were factories in the area and the train tracks and the people weren't as educated about the environment as they are now.
ROCKY BLUE
Do you think there are enough bins in the Edinburgh Gardens?
CHRIS
I'm not sure how many bins there are in the garden. But there can always be more.
ROCKY BLUE
Do you think enough people put their rubbish in the bins?
CHRIS
These days? Yeah, I do. I think a lot of people that live and work around the area use the bins and keep the park and the gardens very clean.
ROCKY BLUE
That's all. Thank you for being with us today at LOL TV.
CHRIS
Thanks, Rocky.
