Catalyst: Large Hadron Collider discovery, 2012

SUBJECTS:  Science, Technologies

YEARS:  9–10

Have you heard of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)?

\Watch this clip to find out about a scientific discovery at the LHC that left physicists uncharacteristically emotional.

Catalyst's Dr Derek Muller takes you inside the LHC and talks to scientists there about the discovery of the Higgs boson and what it means for our understanding of particles and matter.

Things to think about

  1. 1.You might know that matter is made up of particles called atoms and that these are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Did you know that scientists have discovered 12 matter particles and developed theories about how these particles and forces interact?
  2. 2.According to the narrator, what crucial element of the Standard Model is still to be verified? Listen as Derek describes what is happening at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. What are scientists colliding here and how does Derek describe the speed at which these things are travelling?
  3. 3.Explain what you now know about the research being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider, including the Higgs boson's role in it. Why do the scientists in the clip say they hope the new discovery doesn't fit the Standard Model perfectly? Explain briefly.
  4. 4.At the end of the clip, the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider is described as 'a huge milestone in the long quest to uncover the fundamental laws of nature'. Do you agree? Use the internet to find out more about the scientific research conducted at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
