Outback House: Working on the station

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  5–6

Join the Allcourt children who did this, as they spend their first day of learning with the new governess.

Discover how well the sheep wash, built by the squatter and his men, actually works.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Oxley Downs is a sheep station. Making money from selling wool is how the squatter pays his workers and hopes to earn his fortune. What is involved in raising sheep and producing wool? While the men are busy with the sheep, the squatter's children must work too. What kinds of things did children in the 1860s need to learn?
  2. 2.Why does the Indian gentleman wear a turban? What does Mr Allcorn give him? Observe the man's cart. What do you think he does for a living? Why are the sheep washed before shearing? What are two problems the men encounter with the sheep wash design? What are five things the children worked on with the governess that day?
  3. 3.People came to Australia in the 1800s for many different reasons. Many workers came from Asian countries. List five questions you could ask the Indian man to investigate his life, his work in the colonies and his reasons for migrating to Australia. How have we come to know about early migrants to the colonies?
  4. 4.Research the 'Afghan' cameleers. Try searching the National Archives of Australia online. What primary (original) sources of historical evidence can you find? What did the cameleers contribute to Australia's growing colonies? Write two journal entries about a day at an 1860s homestead: one as an English governess and one as a migrant worker from India. Include evidence from historical sources.
