Belief: Mormons in contemporary Australia

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  9–10

Have you ever had somebody knock at your door, wanting to share their faith?

If so, you may have been visited by a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of this religion believe that it is important to spread their message, and do so by door-knocking around the world, including in Australia.

In this clip, discover what life is like for the young members of this church who often have to travel a long way from friends and family in order to spread their faith.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Is there something you believe in so strongly that you want to convince other people of its value? What sort of characteristics would somebody need to approach strangers every day and try to convince them of their point of view?
  2. 2.What has drawn these young Mormons to become missionaries? Throughout this clip, you see snippets of Australian people and their response to the missionaries. What, if anything, can you tell from this about the views of Australians to Mormonism and religion in general? Other than door-knocking, what do the missionaries do, and what does this suggest about their beliefs and values?
  3. 3.The young men in this clip express some views about music and movies that might not be in keeping with the views of the majority of teenagers. What are these views, and what do they suggest about the Mormon attitude towards popular culture today? Do you think this clip is a balanced portrayal of the life and beliefs of a missionary? Why or why not?
  4. 4.Interview three people you know (of different ages) to find out their views about religion. In your research, try to discover how important religion is to them personally, why they believe that some people gravitate towards religion, and what they think the role of religion is in Australian society today. Then summarise your findings in a brief report.
