Elliot and the Surfing Scientist: Making a mobile phone disco

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Have you ever wondered how sound travels?

Watch Ruben Meerman, the Surfing Scientist, as he makes a mini disco using his mobile phone to discover the answer.

Things to think about

  1. 1.How can you make sounds? One way is to bang two hard objects together. What are some other ways?
  2. 2.Ruben puts a mobile phone in a glass. What does he cover the glass with? The cut-out dancers are placed above the phone. What happens to them when the phone rings? Why?
  3. 3.With the help of an adult, do the experiment. Cover the glass with plastic wrap, place an item on top and watch what happens when the phone rings or plays music. Try a piece of card instead of cling wrap. What do you think will happen? Do the items move?
  4. 4.Draw a picture of what happened in the experiment. What happened to the items placed on the plastic wrap and card? What does the sound from the phone do?
