SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  F–2

Watch and listen as Buzz, Belle and Bop perform 'Hey diddle diddle' in this animated music video.

Then try to create your own sentences that include pairs of words that sound the same at the end (rhyme).

Things to think about

  1. 1.Can you think of a nursery rhyme about a dish, a dog, a cat, a cow, and the moon, and a fiddle and a spoon? In that nursery rhyme, all except one of these characters have a pair. Can you remember which ones?
  2. 2.If you know the nursery rhyme 'Hey diddle diddle', sing along with Teddy Rock. As you sing and watch the clip, notice the characters that make up a pair. What are they are doing, and what happens around them? Listen carefully for any words that you think sound much the same, such as 'diddle' and 'fiddle'. These are words that rhyme.
  3. 3.Did you find the pairs of characters in the nursery rhyme? Draw them. Write down words to describe what they are doing. Think of the nursery rhyme to help you.
  4. 4.Which words sounded much the same (rhymed)? Write them down and see if you can work out which letters of the word make up the sound of the rhyme. Draw a line under this group of letters. Can you think of other words that rhyme with that word? Say them and write them down. Get help if you need it.
