Kids in the Garden, Ep 12: Trees: a vital part of our lives

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  3–4, 5–6

Have you ever heard of the 'sausage tree' or the 'dragon blood tree'?

Watch this clip to find out about these and many other types of trees.

Explore how they grow and why they are important.

Presenter Nick Hardcastle will also show you how to plant a tree and grow a bonsai tree.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Can you think of lots of different kinds of trees? Do you know the names of some fruit trees, rainforest trees, Australian native trees? Why are trees important to animals, the environment and us?
  2. 2.Nick, the presenter, describes the grey alder he climbs as a whole ecosystem. Who is it a high-rise home for? And how does it feed the soil and creatures on the ground? Listen for the climates that date palms grow well in. Listen as Nick compares the bark of trees to clothes. Why have trees developed bark?
  3. 3.Make a list of some of the trees in the clip. Include details about each one's structure, growing conditions and special features. What is special about bonsai trees? Explain how the roots and branches are treated when a bonsai tree is being planted and as it grows.
  4. 4.Go to Planet Ark's National Tree Day website to find out when the next Tree Day is, and how you could become involved. There is also a Schools Tree Day with lots of related activities and resources for students and teachers. Follow the steps in the clip to plant your own tree or create a bonsai tree. Don't forget to wear gloves when handling soil and plants.
