'Sing a song of sixpence' sung by Teddy Rock

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  F–2

Watch and listen to Buzz, Belle and Bop perform the nursery rhyme 'Sing a song of sixpence' in this animated music video.

Find out where the king was, what the queen was doing and what happened to the maid. Have fun retelling the story.

Things to think about

  1. 1.The word 'sixpence' is the name of an old coin. What might happen in a song about a sixpence? Who else might be included in the song? Where might the events of the song happen? What problems might start and be solved?
  2. 2.What are the first characters you see after the band? How many of them are served up in a pie? Who is the pie served to? Who is counting money? Who are the next two characters and what are they doing? Which words have the same sound at the end, such as 'rye' and 'pie'? These words rhyme.
  3. 3.Can you remember each of the characters in the nursery rhyme? Draw them. Show where they are, what they are doing and what happens to them. Next, watch the clip and sing the song. Put your pictures into the order that fits where they happen in the clip.
  4. 4.Create your own pages for a book. Do this by retelling and writing the story of the song in your own words. You might like to think about and create a new ending. Perhaps you could add a new character to the story.
