BTN: Exploring the skills of a radio presenter

Subjects: Arts, English
Years: 5–6, 7–8

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a DJ at a radio station?

Watch this clip to find out about a bunch of young people who are doing just that.

While you're watching, we'll explore some of the skills you might need to present your own radio show.

Things to think about

  1. 1.In this world of TV, the internet and iPods, is there still a place for radio? Being able to speak clearly and fluently is an important skill for a radio presenter. What other skills can you think of? Do you speak the same way to different audiences?

  2. 2.Would the language used by the clip's presenter, Nathan, and Sarah, the reporter, appeal to an audience of young people? In the clip, you hear examples of a wide range of radio presenters, from historical sources and Jibba Jabba Radio. Make a list of the speaking skills these 'radio voices' have in common. What sorts of items are included in a Jibba Jabba broadcast?

  3. 3.Why do the Jibba Jabba presenters need to check their broadcasts before they go to air? What impact might this fact have on what a radio presenter at Jibba Jabba says during a broadcast? What advice would you give to a new Jibba Jabba presenter about how to speak effectively to their audience of young people?

  4. 4.Script and rehearse your own Jibba Jabba broadcast based on what's happening in and around your school or community. As you rehearse, keep in mind the features of effective speaking that you have identified. Record your radio show as a podcast to share with others.
