'This old man' sung by Teddy Rock

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  F–2

Watch and listen to Teddy Rock perform the nursery rhyme 'This old man' in this animated music video.

Then have some fun with counting and rhyme as you create and perform new verses for the song.

Things to think about

  1. 1.How good are you at counting? Can you count to ten? Do you know the nursery rhyme 'This old man'? What does the old man do as he 'plays' each number?
  2. 2.If you know the song 'This old man', sing along with Teddy Rock. Watch the clip and see the pictures that go with the actions for each number. Listen to the words of the song. Which words sound much the same at the end, such as 'two' and 'shoe'? These words rhyme.
  3. 3.Sing along with the nursery rhyme and get help to write the word that rhymes with each number. Draw a picture of each word that rhymes with each number. Now try to find different rhyming words for numbers 1 to 10. Sing the nursery rhyme with your new words in it.
  4. 4.Make up rhymes up to the number 20. This time, tell the story of why the old man is playing. You will first need to make up rhyming words for numbers 11 to 20.
