BTN: Public speaking

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  5–6

How do you feel about making a speech in public?

If you think it's pretty scary you're not alone. Find out ways to make speaking in public easier. See how some students have gone about it, using the movie 'The King's Speech' as inspiration.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Think about the times you might be called upon to talk to a large group. It might be for a class assignment or morning assembly or a formal occasion like an awards night. How do you prepare for such an event?
  2. 2.Why is public speaking important? According to the clip, what is the first step in making a great speech? What is the second step and how does this help your public speaking?
  3. 3.Write up a list of 'top tips' for the next time you speak to a large group. How do you think audience size and type might influence your speech? How could you use your voice differently? Share and discuss your pointers with as many other people as you can. Use what you've learnt to adjust or build on your tips.
  4. 4.Find some of the great speeches of history and watch or listen to them. What strategies are being used to convey particular points? Use some of these strategies as you prepare your own speech on an old or new topic of interest or for an event that is coming up. Show your plans to a range of people and get their feedback.
