BTN: Did you see it? Subliminal advertising

SUBJECTS:  English, Media Literacy

YEARS:  5–6, 7–8

Are you persuaded to purchase products by the advertising you see on TV?

If advertising was so subtle that we couldn't distinguish it from the content of the shows we watch, what effect might this have?

Watch this clip and find out how some advertisers are using hidden messages to advertise products and influence our purchasing choices.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What is an advertisement and what is its purpose? Do the products advertised during shows that you watch appeal to you and your friends? Have they worked? Did you buy the product? What features (such as actors, music, graphics) do advertisers use to ensure that their message reaches you?
  2. 2.Listen carefully and find out what was different about the way advertising was presented during the ARIA Awards presentation. Why was this form of advertising controversial? How might advertisers be able to continue to use this form of advertising without breaking advertising regulations?
  3. 3.Compare traditional television advertising with subliminal advertising. What is the main difference between them? Advertisers use subliminal advertising because the viewer is not consciously aware of it. What effect do you think this might have on our ability to question and make informed decisions about the messages we receive?
  4. 4.Watch your favourite advertisement closely. Analyse techniques that the advertiser has used to achieve its purpose. Work out the message/s the ad aims to convey, the probable target audience and how things including visual and sound elements are used to communicate the message. Now plan your own advertisement, with brief explanations of how and why you've used different elements to reach a certain audience.
