For the Juniors: Where does honey come from?

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Discover where honey comes from.

Learn how and why honey is made and how we get different types of honey. See what daily life is like in a bee colony.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever watched bees in a garden? What do they do? Why do you think they do this?
  2. 2.In what ways are bees like us? What jobs do different bees have in the colony? What do bees do when they visit flowers? Why is it important for bees to communicate (talk) with each other? What makes the nectar change into honey?
  3. 3.Why do bees make honey? What would happen if they didn't make extra honey to store? How do you feel about people taking honey from bees? How do scouts tell the other bees where to find the flowers? What would happen if the scouts did not do this? Why do bees have different jobs in the colony? What do you think about this?
  4. 4.Find out how a bee egg grows into an adult bee. Draw what a bee looks like as it grows through each stage of its life. What things do bees need to survive? Which body parts help bees do the things they need to survive? Draw a picture of a bee with these parts labelled.
