Kids in the Garden, Ep 3: Discover flower power!

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2, 3–4

Can you imagine a world without flowers?

Flowers add colour, scent and beauty to our world. But why do plants make them?

Discover the real purpose of flowers and how they do their job.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever looked closely at a flower? What parts do all flowers have? What makes flowers different from each other? What do you think flowers are for?
  2. 2.What flying insects visit flowers? Watch carefully as Nick describes the oriental lily as a 'seed-making factory'. What does he mean by that? Why is pollen important to the plant? Planting seeds is one way to grow another plant. The clip shows another way to do it. What is it?
  3. 3.Explain to someone whether or not you think it is good that bees visit our gardens. You might like to add whether or not bees and flowers benefit (help) each other. Seeds are one stage of a plant's life cycle. Listen again to Nick's explanation of how seeds are formed. Try to draw the life cycle of the oriental lily.
  4. 4.Visit a plant nursery with an adult. Choose some flowers to grow in a pot from seeds or bulbs. Photograph or draw your plants as they grow. Try and grow some plants from cuttings. Ask a gardener which varieties of plants are best to try.
