BTN Podclass using podcasts in school video

SUBJECTS:  Arts, English, Media Literacy

YEARS:  5–6, 7–8

Have you ever used a YouTube video or podcast on the internet to learn a new skill?

Perhaps to learn how to play the guitar or to do new skateboard tricks or dance moves?

Find out how one school in Italy uses podcasts to jazz up its lessons.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you used YouTube or podcasts to learn a new skill, like playing a guitar, skateboarding or cooking a new dish? What are the benefits of learning this way?
  2. 2.What is the origin of the word podcast? What is a 'podclass'? What are some of the things that make a podclass such a hit for students?
  3. 3.List the steps involved in making a podclass as shown in the program. Use this information to plan a podclass for a topic in one of your school subjects. If you can, make the podclass with others. Ask your teacher if you could use it in your next class.
  4. 4.Look up 'teaching podcasts' on the internet. List any topics you find that relate to school subjects. View the podcasts and decide how many 'likes' you would give each one. Compare the one you like most and the one you like least. What exactly do you like and dislike about each of them, and why?
