Count Us In, Ep 10: How long is a minute?

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

Dodly is getting ready for a very special occasion tomorrow. How will he fill in his time?

How long does he have to wait? And what is his special occasion? With Dodly, Flynn and the Flying Girl, investigate different ways of measuring time and discover how to read analogue and digital clocks.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Some of the different units we use for measuring time are minutes, days, hours and weeks. Which ones are shorter than the others? Which are longer? How long is a minute? What can we do in one minute? What about in one second and one hour?
  2. 2.Look at the different instruments used in the video to measure time. How does the Flying Girl measure how long it takes her to fly?
  3. 3.What were some of the ways used in the video to measure time? Can you think of any more? It took Flynn 8 claps to go around the bed. How long will it take you to do something? What are some of the ways you could measure how long it takes you?
  4. 4.Draw an analogue clock onto a blank piece of paper. Use a real clock to help you if you like. Put hour and minute hands onto your clock showing your favourite time of day. What time is this? Write what this looks like in digital time. Draw a picture of you at this time.
