Count Us In, Ep 5: Cool ways to count 1 to 5

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

Watch Dodly and Flynn at the monster fair investigating ways of representing the numbers from one to five.

Two is a double, such as in a double scoop of ice-cream.

Tally marks and 'tri' are used as representations of three, while four monster apples are shown as 3 and 1 or 2 and 2.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Find examples of the numbers from one to five around you. Are any of these numbers shown in different ways, such as 'two', '2', 'two of something', 'double'?
  2. 2.Pause the clip when the girl flies over Four Farm. Can you find which paddock does not have four animals? Notice all the ways the different numbers can be represented.
  3. 3.What were all the ways to represent the numbers one to five in the clip? Record all the different ways of representing each number on a separate piece of paper for each number.
  4. 4.At the end of the monster fair, Dodly and Flynn talked about how many prizes were on the top shelf and how many on the bottom shelf if there were five prizes left. Show all the ways you could have five prizes across two shelves.
