Count Us In, Ep 1: Comparing and classifying

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

Explore numbers with Flynn and Dodly as they compare their marble collection, dinosaur toys and the noses on Dodly's pictures.

Who has more? Who has less? Who has the same?

These are questions often asked during an ordinary day.

Help Flynn work out how many dinosaurs Dodly has in his bag.

Use the clues that Dodly gives Flynn.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Investigate 'more', 'less' and 'the same'. Take a handful of counters each (or similar item). Who has more? Who has less? Who has the same? Can you make them the same?
  2. 2.Look carefully at the clip and see where there is more, where there is less and where there is the same. Which marble collection has more? Are there more faces or noses? Are there more bugs or spiders? Which paddock has more sheep? How many toy dinosaurs does Dodly have?
  3. 3.Talk about 'more', 'less' and 'the same'. Find examples around you. Who has more buttons on their clothes? Who has less? Who has the same number of buttons? Make a collection of 'more' and 'less' and a collection of 'the same'. Draw and count your collections.
  4. 4.Draw two paddocks and put a different number of animals in each paddock. Count the number of animals in each paddock. Which paddock has more animals? Which paddock has less animals? Draw two fish bowls and draw a different number of fish in each bowl. How many fish are in each fish bowl? Which bowl has more fish? Which bowl has less fish?
