Count Us In, Ep 14: How big is the magic bus?

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

How do we measure how big something is?

Flynn and Dodley want to see who has the bigger toy bus. Which bus is taller, wider, longer?

Flynn models how to measure his bus using sticks so he can make a garage for his 'magic' bus.

The Flying girl and others also do some measuring.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Is your hair short or long? Do you know someone with short hair? What about long hair? Can you and a friend make a short snake with counters? Can you make a long snake with counters? Who has the longer snake?
  2. 2.Watch how Dodly measures Flynn's bus. He starts at the end, with no overlapping and no gaps, and makes a straight line. Why is doing these things important when measuring?
  3. 3.Do you remember how Dodly measured his bus to see how wide, high and long the bus was? Use ice cream sticks or similar straight items to measure a toy. Measure how wide, tall and long your toy is. Use counters to measure how long your shoe is. How wide is your shoe?
  4. 4.The Flying Girl measures her flying cape with her hands. The boy measures his bed and himself with milk cartons. When you lie down, how long are you? How long is your friend? Who is longer?
