For the Juniors: A poem about taste

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Imagine what life would be like if you couldn't taste anything.

This rhyming poem will help you think about the importance of our sense of taste.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What are your favourite things to eat? Why do you like eating these things? How would you tell someone else what they taste like?
  2. 2.What body part is shown when the clip begins? Why do you think this is? What other body parts do you see later on in the clip?
  3. 3.Which body parts do we taste with? How do you think tasting works? What would eating be like if you couldn't taste your food? Why did the clip show eyes, ears, nose and a hand? Do you know someone who doesn't have all of these body parts working properly? What do you think this would be like? Of all of these parts, which one is the most important to you?
  4. 4.Find out how our noses help us taste our food. Ask a friend to help you try some food with your eyes closed and your nose blocked. Can you tell what you are eating? Our senses help us find out about the world. Make a poster about our senses. Draw the body parts we use to sense things. List some things you can sense with each of these parts.
