First Tuesday Book Club: To Kill a Mockingbird

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  9–10

Have you ever had to stand up for someone who no one else believes in?

Perhaps someone who is a little bit different?

Discover what this could be like as the First Tuesday Book Club discuss Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird', a classic novel set in the Deep South of America in the 1930s.

Things to think about

  1. 1.'To Kill a Mockingbird' is told through the eyes of the young narrator, Scout. But it is not a child's story. It is a powerful book that deals with small town prejudices towards race, class and religion. What situations today do you know where people are discriminated against because of who or what they are? Have you had to ever stand up for someone or what you believe in despite what everyone else says?
  2. 2.The panellists all are inspired by the book for different reasons. Some are about the way it is written and some are about the message. Identify one of these reasons for each of the panellists.
  3. 3.Harper Lee never wrote another book after 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. The panellists all have different reasons why they think this is so. Briefly research Harper Lee's life. Why do you think she never wrote another book?
  4. 4.'To Kill a Mockingbird' is described as a coming of age novel. What do you think this means? What other coming of age book or film have you read or seen? Compose an email to send to the First Tuesday Bookclub recommending why they should discuss this coming of age story on the show.
