SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  5–6, 9–10

What role do fire-behaviour specialists and ecologists have in fire management?

Watch this clip to find out about issues relating to fire management in Australia, in particular prescribed burning.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What are some strategies for reducing the threat of bushfires in Australia? What do communities do in the non-fire season to prepare for bushfire? Why are these strategies considered important?
  2. 2.What is the role of fire-behaviour specialists? Fire expert Kevin Tolhurst discusses the connection between drought and fire. What does he say happens after many years of drought that increases the fire threat? What is prescribed burning?
  3. 3.Describe some of the issues in the debate about prescribed burning. Include the aims of a prescribed burn program, the conditions required, the stakeholders involved, and the advantages and disadvantages of prescribed burning.
  4. 4.View your state or territory's Department of Environment website to find out what it says about the role of prescribed burning. What areas have been burned recently and what areas are planned for burning? What are your views on prescribed burning?
