ABC News: Life on the land for Italian migrants, 1958

SUBJECTS: History

YEARS: 9–10

Imagine leaving your family behind for years while you set yourself up in a new country.

This was the life for many Europeans who migrated to Australia.

The clip explores life for the Galluzzo family, Italians who came to live in semi-rural areas around Sydney in the 1950s.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Think about your family or a family you know. Is everyone's role clear or are some roles interchangeable? Why do you think this is? How has the land use in your suburb or area changed in the decades since 1945, at the end of World War II? If there have been any changes, how would you describe them?
  2. 2.Watch the first 30 seconds of this clip. If you didn't know this was a farm in Australia, where might you think it was? What imagery and audio would make you think this? Onsonato Galluzzo is described as the patriarch (head) of the Galluzzo family. What evidence supports this? What suggests that this might be changing?
  3. 3.

In the Galluzzo family it seems that everybody has a clearly defined role. What responsibilities do each of the family members have? As Australian cities expand outward, much of the semi-rural land, like that owned by the Galluzzos, is being replaced by new suburbs. What positive and negative effects do you think this might have on the people living there?
