Gardening Australia: Exploring the finished garden

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  3–4, 5–6, 7–8

Explore the Swan Valley Anglican Community School garden with Josh Byrne, and you will be amazed at what they have created in just six months.

This clip will inspire you to create your very own productive garden.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Some schools grow fruit and vegetables and make compost in their school garden. What do you think about students having a school garden to grow food? How would you feel about fresh food you grew yourself?
  2. 2.Aside from chickens and vegetable gardens, what other plants and things are there in this school garden? In the clip, Josh Byrne, the children, a parent and a teacher talk about the benefits of having their own school garden. What are some of the benefits they describe?
  3. 3.In the clip, teacher Matthew Cotton said he prefers to consider the garden an outdoor classroom. What types of things would the children learn in this 'classroom'? List your ideas visually and share them with someone.
  4. 4.Design your very own garden for your school, home or community. Make a list of materials and equipment you will need, the tasks that will need to be undertaken, and the people who will be involved. Visit your local government website to find out about requirements for keeping animals such as chickens, and for recycling water or materials.
