This six and a half minute video segment from Catalyst explains Earthshine as light from our own Earth reflected back from the Moon's dark side. A PhD student is studying it to learn about how light reflects from a planet that contains liquid water as well as land. Her work may one day lead to the discovery of other planets with oceans and continents.

NSW syllabus outcomes

(SC4-12ES) describes the dynamic nature of models, theories and laws in developing scientific understanding of the Earth and solar system

(SC5-11PW) explains how scientific understanding about energy conservation, transfers and transformations is applied in systems

(SC5-12ES) describes changing ideas about the structure of the Earth and the universe to illustrate how models, theories and laws are refined over time by the scientific community

Australian curriculum content descriptions

(ACSSU115) Predictable phenomena on Earth, including seasons and eclipses, are caused by the relative positions of the sun, Earth and the moon

(ACSHE119) Scientific knowledge changes as new evidence becomes available, and some scientific discoveries have significantly changed people’s understanding of the world

(ACSSU182) Energy transfer through different mediums can be explained using wave and particle models
