Landline: Improving crop production in Timor-Leste

SUBJECTS:  Geography

YEARS:  9–10

Explore the challenges to basic survival that farmers in the agricultural regions of Timor-Leste (East Timor) face.

Discover how the 'Seeds of Life' program works to improve the selection and planting of successful crops that have higher yields.

See how these first steps are helping to address rural poverty in the nation.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Timor-Leste is a developing nation and feeding its population is a challenge. What might be some challenges to producing enough food? Think about land availability, climate, crop varieties and technology.
  2. 2.Rob Williams describes two main aims of the Seeds of Life program. What are they? The narrator mentions the 'hungry months' — a lean time for rural farmers. What happens during this period, and why? What is the average wage per day in Timor-Leste? How might that impact the way people live there? Do you see any benefits from the Seeds of Life program?
  3. 3.Could you survive on the average wage of the East Timorese people? What if you had children to take care of? In what way has 'Seeds for Life' helped the people of Timor-Leste earn more money? A song with lyrics related to agriculture plays throughout the clip. What do the lyrics suggest about the life of rural farmers and growing food? What are some fundamental differences between Australian crop farms and Timorese crop farms?
  4. 4.Create a flow chart that compares what you imagine will be the probable impact of the 'Seeds of life' project with the probable impact of an aid program that simply provides the East Timorese people with food to keep them from starving. Visit the Seeds of Life website to find out more about the program's aims and collaborative funding model.
