ABC Open: Difficult memories, reflecting on war

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  9–10

Six people share their thoughts about war.

This clip shows that people who have been to war usually find it difficult to talk about the experience.

Hear how the experience of war can affect those who serve, their families and friends.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What do you know about war? Do you know any adults who have served in a war, or lived during wartime? Can you think of any games about war? What happens in the games? How is real war different from these games?
  2. 2.Who is in the photo that the lady is holding? What did her father say about war? Listen to how each person talks about war. What do you see in the pictures of soldiers?
  3. 3.What feelings did you have when you listened to these people speak? Why might someone who has been in a war find it difficult to speak about their experiences? How might the experience of war affect the friends and family of someone who has served in war? Why do you think this? Why are there war memorials in suburbs, cities and towns all over Australia?
  4. 4.Find out if there is a war memorial in your area. Ask an adult to take you there or find some pictures of it online. Look closely at all parts of the memorial. What do you notice about who or what is represented? How is this done? What effect does it have on you? Design your own war memorial. What symbols, words and images will you include? How would you want people who might visit your memorial to feel?
