Things to think about

  1. 1.Think about a book that you've both read and seen the film adaptation of. Which did you prefer? What influenced your preference? Write down three descriptive phrases that capture your opinion of the film version. Think carefully about your choice of language in order to accurately convey your opinion.
  2. 2.According to Jason Di Rosso, what aspects of 'The great Gatsby' make it suitable for film adaptation? What attracted Baz Luhrmann to novel and inspired him to make a film of it? Which of Scott Donaldson's phrases suggest he doesn't totally approve of Luhrmann's film? Why did Professor Kirk Curnutt appreciate Luhrmann's 'blockbuster'? What words does he use to describe the film?
  3. 3.Jason di Rosso identifies as a film lover. How might this influence his evaluation of the novel's film potential? Scott Donaldson is an F Scott Fitzgerald scholar, while Kirk Curnutt is a university professor. How might their career interests have influenced their evaluations of the film? Jason suggests that the film misinterprets the hope expressed by Gatsby. Do you agree? Do you think Lurhmann would be concerned by this criticism?
  4. 4.Using information from this clip, write a review of Baz Luhrmann's film version of 'The great Gatsby' from the perspective of di Rosso, Donaldson or Professor Curnutt. Use language that conveys their opinions accurately, evaluating the film in accordance with their context and career. Prepare your review as if for publication on a film website.
