Pet Superstars: The beagle: A nose that always knows

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Meet Junior, a beagle who sniffs out all sorts of things, especially treats.

Listen as Josie tells us about life with her pet dog.

People say that beagles have the most amazing sense of smell.

Does Junior? Find out.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Do you have a pet dog or know someone who has a dog as a pet? Why are dogs good pets? What do you need to do to look after a dog?
  2. 2.Josie says her dog Junior has an amazing sense of what? What part of his body does he often use to find things around the house?
  3. 3.Draw a picture to show which body parts a dog like Junior uses to find hidden objects. What does a dog need to live? Draw things you think a dog needs to stay healthy.
  4. 4.Can you pick out different items using your sense of smell? Let's do a test to find out. Ask an adult to choose a few things to test. Have the adult put a blindfold over your eyes. Which items did you get right? Write them down or draw them. Do you think you have a good sense of smell?
