Pet Superstars: Guide dog puppy in training

Subjects: Science
Years: F–2

Meet Ella and the puppy she is helping to train as a guide dog.

Find out what it takes to teach Dusty what he needs to know for a very important job.

Things to think about

  1. 1.A labrador is a breed of dog; so is a poodle. What other breeds of dogs do you know? How are they different to each other? What do you know about guide dogs?

  2. 2.What makes Dusty different from many other pet dogs? What things does Ella have to teach Dusty? What job are guide dogs trained to do?

  3. 3.Why does Dusty have to be taught how to stay calm in crowds and at the table? What other things might Dusty have to do when he becomes a guide dog? Why do you think dogs are trained for this job, rather than another kind of animal?

  4. 4.Draw a picture of Dusty. Label all the features (parts) that will help him do his job as a guide dog. Imagine you are Dusty's new owner. Create a mime (or play) showing all the things you have to do to care for him.
