Pet Superstars: Guinea pig superstar

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Meet Larissa and her guinea pig called 'Superstar'.

Learn how Larissa cares for her guinea pig pets and what her dream is.

Find out what makes Superstar a superstar pet.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What do you know about guinea pigs? What other animals do guinea pigs remind you of? Why?
  2. 2.Look at the shape of the guinea pigs. In what ways are the types (breeds) of guinea pigs different from each other? How are all the guinea pigs similar (alike)? What does Larissa do to care for her guinea pig pets?
  3. 3.How might the life of a wild guinea pig (cavy) be different from Superstar's? Wild guinea pigs live in small groups on grassy areas. They often live in a burrow made by other animals. Guinea pigs have ears, bodies covered in fur and four legs. So do most rabbits, rats and cats. Which features of these three animals are different from guinea pigs?
  4. 4.List some animals that have fur and four legs. Make a table to compare these animals. Use headings such as ears, legs, tail and body. Add more features (parts) if you like. Now draw or write in your table to describe each body part. For example, in the 'ear' box for rabbits you might put 'long, furry'.
