What was the first day of school like for your parents?

This clip shows a group of children arriving at school with their parents in 1974.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Can you remember being taken to school on your first day? How did you feel? What things happened on your first day of school? What did you talk about when you went home?
  2. 2.How are the children travelling to school? What are they wearing? Look closely at what they carry to school. Watch their faces and think about how they are feeling. What does the Principal talk about?
  3. 3.How can you tell that this video was filmed in the past? How are school uniforms the same or different today? What do you notice about the hairstyles and clothing in the clip? The children carry cases with handles. How is your school bag the same or different?
  4. 4.Let's make a 'spot the difference' picture. Fold a sheet of paper in half. On one side, draw your first day at school. On the other side, draw a parent, aunt or uncle or grandparent on their first day at school. Ask them to help you with the details, such as what they are wearing and carrying, and what the classroom looked like.
