This Day Tonight: A city without a heart?

SUBJECTS:  Geography, History

YEARS:  7–8

Iconic but sterile, nationally significant yet isolated.

The city of Canberra regularly seems to divide opinion.

Watch this clip and take an intriguing look at life in Canberra at the start of the 1970s.

As you'll see, arguments about the liveability of Canberra are nothing new.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Canberra was specifically built to be Australia's national capital. It was founded and named in 1903, and is a 'planned city', one designed for a previously undeveloped area. Do you know any major buildings and landmarks in Canberra? Do you think that Canberra, as the national capital, is important to all Australians? Why/why not?
  2. 2.At the start of the clip, what positive characteristics of Canberra's population does the reporter identify? Note the major criticisms expressed in the voice overs by Canberra residents. What areas of rapid social change are suggested? Outline criticisms related to the public service that suggest there are difficulties for people new to Canberra.
  3. 3.Using comments from the clip, create a table that lists Canberra's positive characteristics as well as criticisms of its urban planning. Based on the comments, what do you think life would be like in Canberra during this time? How might the large number and regular turnover of public servants provide an ongoing challenge for planners?
  4. 4.Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin worked together on the design that won the Federal Capital Design Competition in 1912. Find out more about this design and the ideas behind it. To what extent does Canberra still reflect the Griffins' original ideas? Investigate how the winning plans have been adjusted over time to take changing needs into account.
