First Tuesday Book Club: What's so funny about parody?

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  9–10

Parody is a popular form of humour where a particular subject is mocked or trivialised.

The novel 'Cold Comfort Farm' is an example of parody. But what makes novels such as this so funny?

Find out more by exploring this clip.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you seen any parodies of films or music videos before? What made them humorous? A number of 19th century writers wrote about the tough conditions in rural England. Their novels were dark and gloomy, with little happiness found by the characters. 'Cold Comfort Farm' is a parody of such novels. How do you think its author might parody this subject?
  2. 2.What does Jason Steger find humorous about the narrative voice in 'Cold Comfort Farm'? What examples are given of the absurd nature of the characters who inhabit the farm? What drove the character of Ada Doom mad? Why might this be seen as funny? How does Marieke Hardy describe the storyline? What TV show does Michael Robotham compare the novel to? Why does he make this comparison?
  3. 3.What elements of parody does 'Cold Comfort Farm' seem to demonstrate? Why does Marieke Hardy think the book succeeds as a comedy when it might otherwise have been 'merely fluff and ridiculous'?
  4. 4.The dystopian genre seems to be very popular, with such blockbuster films as 'The Hunger Games' and 'Divergent'. Write a short story that parodies this genre, exaggerating its features for humorous effect. You might consider typical features of the genre, such as the disaster that changes the world order and the obstacles the hero has to overcome.
