First Tuesday Book Club: Navigating 'Cloud Atlas'

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  9–10

Some authors like to take readers on a journey, none more so than David Mitchell, the author of 'Cloud Atlas'.

His novel is a complex tale that attempts to weave together six different narratives over a period of hundreds of years.

Join in this discussion and find out if he succeeds.

This clip is the second in a series of two.

Things to think about

  1. 1.At the end of this discussion of 'Cloud Atlas', the panellist Jason Steger says that it's nice to read a 'different' book. Have you read a novel that you consider to be different in the way it tells a story? Do you agree with Jason's comment?
  2. 2.Which themes connect the separate narratives in 'Cloud Atlas'? Which visual symbol reappears on each character? What is the 'Cloud Atlas Sextet'? In what way does it represent the narrative structure? What happens structurally in the second half of the novel? How might this mediate the book's dystopian themes? Identify the various responses to 'Cloud Atlas' you hear in this discussion.
  3. 3.Anna Funder suggests that 'Cloud Atlas' is 'the Kokoda Trail of literature' — something that everyone wants to read but is too scared to attempt. Why might people be scared of reading this book? How do the panellists respond to Anna's observation? Do you feel too intimidated to read the book?
  4. 4.'Cloud Atlas' was described as 'unfilmable' due to its complex structure. The Wachowski brothers, responsible for 'The Matrix' trilogy, took on this challenge and eventually released the film in 2012 to a very mixed reception. Use appropriate sources to find reviews of the film and compare them with the comments made in this discussion. Are there similarities in the critics' responses? Are there notable differences?
