First Tuesday Book Club: Ruth Park's wicked, sweet, funny masterpiece

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  9–10

When Ruth Park wrote 'The Harp in the South', little did she know the storm of controversy it would cause.

But why did it cause such outrage? And how did it go on to become one of Australia's best-loved novels? To find out, we need to go back in time — or just watch this clip!

Things to think about

  1. 1.When the the Harry Potter series was first published there were also strong reactions. While adored by readers of all ages, it was derided for the quality of its writing, and banned in some places for its occult themes. Why do you think people have different responses to the same book?
  2. 2.The Harp in the South' was first published in 1948. Why did it cause controversy? What criticisms arose from its focus on the working class? Who wrote letters in the book's defence? What does Marieke Hardy value about Ruth Park's writing? What does Michael Williams enjoy? Why does Judy Nunn have such a personal reaction to the book? What was the local government's reaction?
  3. 3.Pick two different reactions to Ruth Park's novel. Consider the context of each person or group and explain why they might have responded in the way they did. Jason Steger says the book was described as 'a wallow in depravity, filth and crime', and Michael jokes, 'They really should be putting that on the front cover.' What does this suggest about the ways our views towards literature have changed?
  4. 4.Young adult (YA) literature is a genre that frequently causes controversy today. Research the debate about the censorship of YA literature and write a letter to the editor of your newspaper explaining your views on whether younger readers should be protected from certain subjects.
