Mixed Up Maths, Ep 9: The giraffe ate it

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

When something has no chance of happening we say its impossible.

Sometimes the chance of something happening is unlikely. Listen to these excuses explaining why the host did not do his homework. Which of his excuses might the teacher think, the chance of this happening is … 'possible'?

Things to think about

  1. 1.You have a bag of coloured lollies. In the bag there are two red and two green lollies. What is the chance of pulling out a yellow lolly? Would you say unlikely, possible or impossible? Look out the window. What is the weather like? What do you think is the chance of it raining tomorrow? Why?
  2. 2.Listen to the host's first excuse about why he didn't do his homework. What is the chance of his teacher believing that it could happen? Which excuse was unlikely to be believed? What about the excuse about looking for the missing cat. Is the chance of that happening possible?
  3. 3.Match these events with the words really unlikely, unlikely, possible or impossible. (You can use the same word more than once). Your family will go overseas next year. When you grow up you will represent Australia in a sport. Tomorrow will be your first birthday. It will be sunny tomorrow.
  4. 4.Draw an event where the chance of it happening is really unlikely, unlikely, possible or impossible. Write a sentence about the event and describe the chance of it happening.
